Disclosed invoice discounting

Understand disclosed discounting, customer notices and why disclosure is a different question from who manages credit control.

With disclosed invoice discounting, customers are told that a finance provider is involved. Your business may still handle collections. This differs from factoring, where the provider normally supplies a collections service. Check both disclosure and collection responsibilities in the proposed agreement.

Why the distinction matters

Product labels are not perfectly consistent across the market. Ask a provider to explain its exact service rather than relying on a name. The written agreement should identify who issues notices, where the customer pays, who chases late invoices and how disputes are escalated.

Planning customer communication

If customers need new payment instructions, prepare a clear, verified message and a process for independent confirmation. A bank-detail change is a moment when impersonation fraud can occur. Do not send a rushed email and assume every customer will update its records correctly.

Create a transition list showing who has acknowledged the change and who still needs contact. Reconcile the first receipts closely. Customers with procurement portals or central accounts-payable systems may need lead time to update their records.

Questions about customer contact

  • Will the provider contact customers directly, and for what purposes?
  • Who handles invoice disputes and agrees credit notes?
  • What wording must appear on invoices or notices?
  • Can customers use their existing payment references?
  • Who resolves a receipt sent to the wrong account?

Compare the operational burden

Disclosure does not remove the need for accurate bookkeeping. If your business retains credit control, allow for staff time and ledger reporting. If the provider also offers collections, compare that service with a factoring proposal on the same basis.

Payment problems to plan for

Consider a large customer that refuses to process an unrecognised account change, an overdue invoice that becomes ineligible and a dispute requiring a credit note. Ask how the provider handles each situation and whether a reserve is needed. A practical implementation plan can be as valuable as a small pricing difference.

Choosing the structure

The relevant choice is whether the facility's funding, service and customer process work for the business. Confidentiality alone is not a measure of quality, and disclosure does not itself imply financial distress. Compare written terms, not assumptions about how a product will look to customers.
