What is invoice discounting?

Invoice discounting explained for UK businesses: what it means, who collects payments and how the facility releases working capital.

Invoice discounting lets a business access funding against unpaid customer invoices. The finance provider advances an agreed proportion of the invoices it accepts, while your business keeps its sales ledger up to date and collects customer payments. This gives you access to working capital before customers pay.

The meaning of “discounting”

Here, discounting describes the financing arrangement. It does not normally mean giving your customer a price reduction. An early-payment discount reduces what the customer pays; invoice discounting instead introduces a finance provider and funding costs. The two can coexist, but a customer discount may reduce the invoice value the funder will accept.

Where it fits in the cash cycle

Suppose you have completed an order and issued a £20,000 invoice payable in 60 days. An illustrative 85% advance makes £17,000 available before the customer pays. The remaining £3,000 is not extra funding: it is the balance held back, from which agreed fees and adjustments may be settled. The actual cash available depends on approved invoices, reserves, existing drawings and the facility limit.

This example assumes the entire invoice qualifies and the advance is drawn immediately. An overdue or disputed invoice may be excluded, and a facility can contain separate limits for individual customers. Use our calculator to change the assumptions rather than treating 85% as an offer.

Who does what?

  • Your business supplies the goods or services and issues accurate invoices.
  • The provider assesses the ledger and makes funding available under its agreement.
  • Your team maintains credit control, resolves disputes and reconciles receipts.
  • Customer payments reduce the funded balance through the agreed collection arrangements.

Confidentiality and responsibility

Discounting may be confidential, meaning the arrangement is not routinely disclosed to customers. Confidentiality is a feature to confirm in the contract, rather than a promise that every arrangement stays undisclosed in every circumstance. Ask what happens following default, disputed collections or a change in eligibility.

Do not assume that selling or assigning invoices removes all financial risk. With recourse arrangements, customer non-payment can leave your business responsible for repaying the advance. Credit protection has its own scope, limits and exclusions.

Is it the same as factoring?

Both sit within invoice finance. The practical distinction is the management service: factoring normally includes the provider handling collections, whereas discounting leaves that work with your team. A business with weak collections may benefit more from support than from confidentiality alone.

The first decision to make

Identify how much cash you need between supplying customers and receiving payment. Build a weekly forecast, record how long customers actually take to pay, and compare the funding available with the full fees. If the business is making ongoing losses, borrowing against invoices will not resolve that underlying problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is invoice discounting a loan?

It is a finance facility secured or structured against receivables. Its legal and accounting treatment depends on the agreement; do not assume it is automatically off balance sheet.

Will my customers pay less?

Not because of the finance arrangement itself. A trade or early-payment discount is a separate commercial decision.
