Invoice discounting application checklist

Prepare an aged debtor report, financial information, cash forecast and contract questions before requesting an invoice discounting proposal.

A well-prepared invoice discounting enquiry explains the cash requirement and supports it with a reliable ledger. Before sharing financial records, verify the provider or broker, confirm which documents are needed and ask how to send them securely.

Business information

Prepare the legal business name, company number where relevant, trading address, ownership information and trading history. Keep the business description specific: what you supply, who buys it and when you are paid. Explain any recent changes such as a new contract, acquisition or loss of a major customer.

Financial records

Have recent accounts, up-to-date management information and business bank statements available if requested. Note existing loans, overdrafts, asset finance and tax arrangements accurately. A provider needs a consistent picture; unexplained differences between your accounts, bank receipts and debtor report slow assessment.

Ledger and customer evidence

  • A current aged-debtor report, with customer names and balances.
  • A sales ledger and recent invoice examples.
  • Payment terms and actual collection history.
  • A summary of credit notes, disputes and bad debts.
  • Customer concentration and any connected businesses.
  • Contracts, delivery evidence or signed timesheets where relevant.

The cash requirement

Build a weekly forecast covering your operating cycle, with peak funding needs clearly identified. Include a downside case where a large customer pays late. Separate a recurring invoice-to-payment gap from costs incurred before goods are delivered or invoices can be raised.

Operational preparation

Choose who will upload or synchronise ledger information, reconcile receipts and resolve exceptions. Confirm that another colleague can cover absences. If a new collection account or invoice wording is required, plan the customer communication before the facility starts.

Questions to ask with the proposal

Request a worked availability statement based on your own ledger. Obtain the complete fee schedule, minimum term, notice period, security, guarantees and default provisions. Ask what changes when sales grow, sales shrink or invoices become overdue. Record anything promised verbally in the written proposal or agreement.

Before submitting personal information

Check the organisation's identity using an independently found contact route. Understand who will receive the information and whether a broker may receive commission or charge a fee. Avoid sharing account passwords, one-time passcodes or banking credentials as part of an ordinary finance enquiry.

Final review

Compare the opening cash release with the actual deficit in your forecast. Deduct the cost of repaying any existing facility and any initial charges. A larger headline limit does not always mean more cash on day one. Ask your accountant or legal adviser to review unfamiliar obligations before you commit.
