Invoice discounting may suit a smaller business with unpaid trade invoices and a reliable collections process. Compare the amount of funding available with the minimum fees and administration involved. Some facilities cost too much for businesses that need only a small or occasional advance.

Turnover is only the starting point
Providers set their own criteria. A business outside one provider's minimum may fit another product, while a business above the minimum can still have unsuitable invoices. Focus on eligible receivables and the size of the recurring cash gap, rather than turnover alone.
Minimum fees can dominate
Consider an illustrative facility charging a £300 monthly minimum service fee. That is £3,600 a year before discount charges and other costs. If it only supports a £15,000 average funding need, the fixed cost deserves close attention. This is an example for comparison, not a current market quotation.
Bookkeeping and staff time
Discounting leaves the ledger and collections with your team. Ask who will reconcile payments, update disputes and report to the provider. If the owner must do that work personally, include their time and the cost of accounting support in the comparison. A factoring service may address a different operational need.
Occasional vs ongoing needs
A business with a few large seasonal invoices may want to compare selective or single-invoice finance. A business with a recurring gap may benefit from an ongoing facility. Obtain quotations for the expected annual pattern, including quiet months and late customer payments.
New businesses
A young business may have fewer historic accounts and less evidence of customer collections. Some providers have specialist products, but an unsigned sales pipeline is not the same as an eligible invoice book. Be clear whether you need finance before delivery, after invoicing or both.
Steps before approaching providers
- Bring the sales ledger up to date and resolve disputed balances.
- Map your largest customers and usual payment times.
- Prepare a weekly forecast showing the peak shortfall.
- Ask for a written net-cash and total-cost illustration.
- Compare better deposits, payment terms, factoring and other working-capital routes.
An appropriate outcome
If the expected fee and administration outweigh the benefit, deciding against a facility can be the right result. Invoice discounting should make a workable business easier to fund, rather than add a new fixed cost without enough useful cash in return.
