Haulage businesses can pay for fuel and drivers well before customers settle transport invoices. Invoice discounting may help bridge the period after invoicing, but the usefulness of the facility depends on evidence of delivery, customer limits and the margin left after finance costs.

Match operating costs to invoice receipts
Forecast fuel, wages, maintenance and other operating costs weekly. Separate vehicle repayments from the working capital needed to complete journeys. A receivables facility should not be assumed to replace appropriate vehicle finance or cover every cost before an invoice can be raised.
Proof of delivery
Agree the provider's documentation requirements. Missing or disputed delivery evidence can delay customer approval and may affect funding. A quick internal process for collecting and matching proof of delivery can therefore improve both collections and financing reliability.
Customer terms and deductions
Review the terms under which customers can deduct amounts, reject charges or offset claims. Record adjustments promptly. An invoice's face value may overstate the amount ultimately collectible if routine deductions are not reflected in the ledger.
Large contracts
A major distribution contract can increase sales while making the business more dependent on one customer. Ask the funder to confirm the approved exposure before committing additional vehicles or staff. Include the first weeks of work before invoices are eligible in your cash forecast.
A downside scenario
Model a large customer paying a fortnight late during a period of high fuel costs. Add the extra drawings and check whether the invoices remain eligible. Keep maintenance and tax commitments visible rather than using all funding availability for daily running costs.
Questions for a provider
- What delivery documentation is required and when does funding begin?
- Are subcontracted work, cross-border invoices and foreign currencies supported?
- How are claims, deductions and offsets treated?
- What customer concentration limits apply?
- How would the facility interact with existing vehicle finance?
Compare the funding available after deductions
Compare quotes using expected invoice volume, actual collection days and realistic deductions. A higher advance is helpful only if the relevant invoices qualify. Keep the focus on cash available after exclusions and fees, and on the operating margin that remains.
